GENERAL DEFINITION: This position will enhance the organizational and instructional capacity of the A:shiwi Tribal College (ATC) using Indigenous/Holographic epistemology to develop innovative academic and cultural based programming, community-based education to address the higher education needs of Zuni Pueblo and the surrounding service area. This position requires familiarity with college and university teaching; tribal, state and federal educational requirements; Indigenous research strategies; Higher Learning Commission requirements and knowledge of student academic and instructional education needs & confidentiality in accordance with FERPA requirements.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the general supervision of the ATC President.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision for all academic instructors, student support personnel and community educators
DUTIES:
Collaborate with ATC leadership to design Indigenous & Zuni programs & curriculum.
- Develop culturally responsive instructional programs, lesson planning and syllabi rubric.
- Coordinate with ATC staff to plan and implement community-based support programs.
- Collaborate with ATC leadership and other staff to plan and implement a series of trainings to meet tribal/educator, parents and community education needs.
- Prepare and teach one college credit course per year on Indigenous studies topics.
- Assist ATC leadership and tribe to meet HLC accreditation requirements for tribal colleges.
- Maintain compliance & accountability in accord with W. K. Kellogg Foundation requirements.
- Develop professional support programming for teachers from Indigenous and western perspectives.
- Coordinate the development of academic schedules and course offerings each semester.
- Assist to plan summer academic enrichment programs
- Supervise all aspects of daily instructional/academic programs and operations.
- Research, synthesize and recommend best practice Indigenous programs and learning practices
- Provide advice and recommendations to President regarding all aspects of instructional/academic programming.
Interact and maintain liaison with students, families, tribal staff, the ATC and outside community agencies to facilitate information about instructional programs and objectives.
- Support recruitment and outreach services to Zuni and surrounding tribal communities.
- Serve as the point of contact for coordinating academic and instructional programs and activities with partner universities and colleges
- Coordinate with ATC staff to promote Zuni professionals served by the ZETAC program.
- Coordinate with ATC staff, tribal programs and high schools to sponsor college and career activities.
- Maintain communication with schools, hospital and tribal agencies regarding educational offerings
- Meet with tribal and other education programs to identify levels of need and plan support.
- Participate in outreach events in Zuni community.
Communicates compliance with and carries out requirements of the personnel policies and procedures, including, but not limited to:
- Assist in supervision of academic/instructional and community education programs and associated personnel
- Provide supervision for instructors teaching on campus.
- Conducts performance evaluations, develops Individual Development Plans with staff, and implements disciplinary actions.
- Develops or updates position descriptions for all program staff.
- Oversees the development of or prepares Personnel Actions, as needed, for various purposes.
- Develops staff training plans and may conduct training for staff for internal program operations.
- Attends seminars, continuing education activities and conferences to maintain level of professional training.
- Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure communication among personnel regarding program-related activities and to review program goals and objectives.
- Confers with program personnel to provide technical advice and to assist in solving problems.
Assist ATC leadership with organizational development tasks and institutional development activities.
- Attend and provide information report at monthly briefings to the Zuni Tribal Council.
- Coordinate and conduct surveys to assess instructional needs student needs.
- Assist in developing monthly informational updating of ATC website.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be knowledgeable of tribal community/reservation environments, social/educational/cultural demographics and higher education needs. Experience in developing and supervising campus and community based instructional programs; public presentations & group facilitation; teaching and instructional program development using Indigenous and contemporary western perspectives; program planning, assessment and curriculum development; staff supervision; familiar with or willing to learn work-based software applications to include: Jenzabar student accountability software, Word, Excel, distance learning technology and PowerPoint. Ability to develop educational/instructional programs to support student needs. Knowledge of Indigenous epistemology and pedagogy for application in tribal environments. Ability to work with ATC leadership and work in a college environment to promote organizational success. Familiar with Higher Learning Commission requirements for tribal colleges. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. Ability to use independent judgment, manage and impart confidential information. Knowledge of academic standards governing teaching related to Indigenous studies. Ability to analyze course prerequisites, certification, curriculum standards. Ability to work in team approach to develop Indigenous studies program for ATC.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: PhD preferred, in Higher Education, Indigenous Studies, Educational Leadership, Socio-Cultural Studies, Curriculum/Instruction or related field with any equivalent combination of experience, training, or education; (master’s degree required for teaching college credit courses) with 3-6 years of experience working with underrepresented students and community residents from rural and reservation-based communities. Including 1-3 years of college level teaching and qualify for college/university teaching assignment
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE: Must have a valid New Mexico Driver’s License with not DUI/DWI convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is not an essential part of the duties.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. Position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug screening for duration of employment. Must undergo and successfully pass a background investigation including FBI Fingerprints. Ability to travel and attend evening and extended day events.
